May Democracy Café

The next Café is on Saturday 9 May in the Library as usual starting at 10:00 and finishing at noon with a short break. Free but contributions gratefully accepted.

Almost too much to talk about. We’ll know the results of the elections of course but should local elections be little more than a kind of referendum on Westminster? Is it not discouraging for a local politician who works hard for his or her community (and there are many) to be ejected because they are in the wrong party?

Should King Charles have gone to Washington? I speak as a republican but I have to admit his visit was a success in extremely difficult circumstances. His speech was excellent and well delivered. Should we keep our monarchy especially in view of its disgraced members?

The violence in Golders Green has shaken the Jewish community there. Attacks on synagogues and on individuals are obviously unacceptable. The events in the Middle East have had an effect however but how far should Jewish people living here be blamed? There are many who are horrified by Netanyahu and Smotrich. We do not after all attack Russian people living here or their churches etc. But should marches in support of Palestine be banned?

So see you there on 9th.
