We are thinking of holding a meeting soon to review our future and what we should do.
The Democracy Cafés continue although numbers attending have fallen the last two months. We would welcome more to come onto our committee or at least take part in discussions about ‘what next?’
People are dissatisfied about the political process and he decline of the two-party system is evident.
If anyone reading this in the South Wiltshire area thinks they have ideas or something to contribute please get in touch and maybe come along when the meeting date is agreed (early October).
There’s a lot to do locally I feel. I’ve just come back from a southern French city where the local square – like ours in front of their equivalent of a town hall – has been remodelled and resurfaced with fountains which are lit at night; I watched streets being washed and rubbish collected on a Sunday; where the city centre has been cleared of nearly all traffic leaving tranquil streets and spaces and where the local transport system is free for residents. There were very few empty shops and none in the main shopping streets. Cost? Their equivalent of community charge is about 80% of ours. The downside was quite a high number sleeping rough and quite a few beggars.
We do not seem to have that ambition, imagination or pride and wonder why we have rows of empty shops and more charity shops than you can shake a stick at.
So what could we do? Is there a role for us?
